Attacking Terrorism

The Democrats are complaining that conservative Republicans refused to fund $4 billion for airport screening, which is why there was a terrorist flying from Amsterdam (begging the question as to how American screening would have prevented this occurrence). And it's all Bush's fault (this line of reasoning is getting a bit tedious).
So now we're past all the finger pointing, here's some ideas:
1. Twenty-six of the last 28 terrorist attempts were foiled by intelligence operations. Obviously, this is where money should be put. The terrorists shouldn't even get NEAR an airport.
2. Suspicious folks should have more screening. Yes, it's called profiling, if you want to use a politically charged word. But it's just common sense. That's how the police catch crooks--that's how screeners catch terrorists.
3. But the airline screeners need more information. And so do the consulate folks who give out visas. They need access to the correct databases. This isn't rocket science. It's just putting the information in the right places.
This is part of the Department of Homeland Security's work. However, the appropriate policies haven't been set up by those folks (under Napolitano) yet.

Where is our President?

As I sit here listening to Christmas music---yes, it's Christmas, actually the fifth day of Christmas (before Christmas day it's Advent)---about peace on earth, goodwill to men, I am thinking about terrorism.
And what our President is NOT doing about terrorism.
Please read this article:
http://blog.heritage.org/2009/12/28/an-absentee-and-complacent-president/#more-22470
I'm not ridiculing our President. But he has an office and a responsibility that carries an enormous burden. And yet he didn't learn about the terrorist attack until 2 hours after it happened. His aides didn't want to bother him.
Instead, he's played with his kids--no problem there. President Obama's been playing golf with friends, gone to dinner--again, no problem
He's played on the beach, which was closed to the military for the First Family.
But to wait 72 hours to respond to this threat?
Is this leadership?

Global Warming in Dallas

It's supposed to snow again tomorrow!
This pic is from Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas! (It IS the fourth day of Christmas, you know).

And Speaking of Terrorists...

What shall President Obama do now about the 95 Yemenis still at Guantanamo Bay?
In the past two months, al-Qaeda has sponsored two terrorist attacks from Yemen.
And the Christmas Day terrorist is warning of more attacks from Yemen in the works.
So should we send 95 terrorists back to Yemen to re-unite with their al-Qaeda buddies?
That's what the White House wishes to do.

Dumb Quote of the Week

As in really, really dumb.
From Secretary Janet Nepolitano: "The system worked."
No, it didn't.
My suggestion? Profiling, profiling, profiling.
That's how crooks--and terrorists--are caught.
Instead, passengers will be made to stay in their seats the last hour of international flights.
Huh?
I thought that the terrorist DID stay in his seat. From all reports, he was so gorked out (on drugs, perhaps?) that he didn't even react to third-degree burns.
Maybe this is to counter such brave people as Dutch citizen Jasper Schuringa who leapt out of his seat to wrest the explosive device from the terrorist.

And Where'd that Global Warming Go?

It's snowing up a storm here in Dallas! We may have a white Christmas! (though it's supposed to clear up and be sunny and above freezing tomorrow...)

Anyhow, how did yall enjoy Copenhagen?
From all reports (of course, disregarding the main-stream Obama-supporting media here in the US), the conference was a failure.
Thank goodness for failures.
Nothing got done--those who wanted a world-wide mandate on reducing carbon emissions are very, very unhappy--because nothing got done.
All these meetings occurred while Copenhagen was having record snowfalls.
Poetic Justice.

Now, where'd that Recovery go?

About two months ago, the Commerce Department praised the 3.5 percent growth in GDP.
Then, the numbers got revised--downward. To 2.8 %.
Still, said the White House, things are okay!
Well, now the numbers have been revised AGAIN!!
Oops, wrong way, they went down....to 2.2%.
This indicates the economy is not growing so very well. Especially since Cash-for-Clunkers and home-buying tax breaks are estimated to account for at least one-half the growth numbers.
Which leaves the economic growth at....
TA-DA!!! Drum roll and all that!!!....at most 0.7%.

Obamacare and Bribes

Yes, I consider these actions "bribes".
As in "money or favor given or promised in order to influence the judgment or conduct of a person in a position of trust".
These are the bribes given by Senator Harry Reid to get his Obamacare vote for cloture in the middle of the night:
1. Nebraska will receive $100 million dollars for Medicaid. This promise was given to Senator Ben Nelson (D-Nebraska) in exchange for his vote.
BTW, Massachusetts (Senators John Kerry and Paul Kirk) and Vermont (Senator Bernie Sanders) got this, too.
2. Another $100 million to Louisiana for Senator Mary Landrieu's (D-Louisiana) vote.
3. Senator Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) got $100 million dollars for a new hospital for the University of Connecticut.
4. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) got $10 billion for community health centers.
5. Senator Carl Levin (D-Michigan) got an exemption from excise taxes on the state's non-profit insurers. Oh, and Senator Ben Nelson was able to get this exemption too!
6. Pennsylvania (Senators Robert Casey D-Pa and Arlen Specter D-Pa), New York (Senators Charles Schumer D-NY and Kirstin Gillibrand D-NY) and Florida (Senator Bill Nelson D-Florida) got protection for their Medicare Advantage programs, which are under the axe in other states.

And---In the House: Don't forget the $300 million dollars to California for Medicare help and for the vote of Representative Sam Farr (D-California).

And et cetera:
1. It's $18 million to AARP for their support of Obamacare, which will be a boost to their selling of Medicare gap coverage. This ostensibly was given for jobs creation, but according to Recovery.gov, no jobs have been created by AARP.
2. Unions--in the House version, unions, which have apparently mismanaged retirement funds, will be eligible for up to $10 million dollars to "reinsure" their retirees.

Christmas Treat for Terrorists

This weekend, President Obama released twelve Guantanamo prisoners back to their countries. Twelve went back to Yemen, four to Afghanistan, and two to Somaliland (a rebel area from Somalia that isn't recognized by the U.S. and has no diplomatic ties to us).
The Justice Department states it has reviewed the cases before releasing these twelve men. This action is thought to be a "prelude to the release of dozens more detainees to Yemen".
BTW, the Pentagon described one of the freed men as "exemplif(ing) the genuine threat that the United States and other countries face throughout the world from dangerous extremists". Wow.
A few other comments on these releases:
***There's a real problem here with conflict of interest: our Attorney General, Mr. Eric Holder, is senior partner in the law firm of Covington and Burling which has provided thousands of hours of pro-bono work to free Guantanamo prisoners. This law firm has been at the forefront of accusing the Guantanamo prison of torture, and pushing for the trial of the prisoners on US soil with all the rights of US citizens. While Mr. Holder is recusing himself from the actual legal proceedings, he is still in charge and has a say in the law firm's decisions.
***There's not a great record of the safety of letting these prisoners go. One is now a leading al Qaeda poet in Saudi Arabia, writing against Saudi royals and the United States. Oh, and two Gitmo prisoners with this "poet" have been killed in al Qaeda actions.
***Another freed prisoner is set to be tried in Italy on international terrorist charges for recruiting men to fight in Afghanistan.
Although, on second thought, these guys probably don't believe in Christmas.
Oh, well, it's the thought that counts.

Oooh! A New Missile for Iran!

A brand spanking-new missile was test fired yesterday in Iran.
This new missile is capable of hitting Israel and parts of Europe (including US bases) and is faster and more advanced than previous rockets.
This new missile could have been stopped by the very missile shield that President Obama shut down earlier this year. This missile shield had been promised to our allies in the Czech Republic and Poland.
The Iranian Defense Minister states that the rocket is a "strong deterrent" to against foreign attack, such as a strike against Iran's nuclear sites.
The U.S. and its allies believe that Iran is developing nuclear arms and has warned Iran to quit it. United Nations talks have gone nowhere, basically.
Stand-off, anyone?

Your Taxes At Work

Remember how yesterday I stated that less spending would help our economy?
Well, the Senate did not agree.
The Senate voted yesterday and passed an over 1 trillion dollar spending bill.
This bill represents a 12% INCREASE in spending.
And it's full of earmarks--otherwise known as pork-barrel projects.
Last week, the Senate introduced legislation to begin a Task Force to reduce spending, seeing as how they are running up trillions of dollars in deficits.
It didn't seem to make much difference--nine senators who sponsored the Fiscal Task Force then turned around and voted for the spending bill.
It's enough to make your head spin!
BTW, the nine senators who seem more than slightly muddled in their thinking are:
Michael Bennet (D-CO)
Kent Conrad (D-ND)
Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)
Joseph Lieberman (D-CT)
Ben Nelson (D-NE)Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL)
Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)
Mark Udall (D-CO) and
Mark Warner (D-VA).
Oh, and in case you might be interested, the federal workers who earn more than $150,000 per year has more than doubled in the last couple of years.
More than 22,000 federal employees make more than $170,000.
That doesn't count the $41,000 each earns in benefits.
This was begun under President Bush, and needs to be addressed by Congress and President Obama now.

How to REALLY Create Jobs (Hint: Not by Spending More)

Here's some thoughts, as I promised, on how to create jobs and truly stimulate our economy:
1. Reduce taxes.
2. Reduce regulationson businesses where possible.
3. Stop government spending.
4. Get government out of private industry--government should not take over private corporations (such as General Motors and Chrysler), government should not bail out banks, and government should not control pay for private industries, and government should not take over health care.
5. End the death taxes.
6. Stop government spending--worth saying again! The deficit is destroying our economy.

ACORN--"Nuts to You"

In September, after the repeated reports of ACORN's willingness to aid and abet in illegal goings-on, Congress decided overwhelmingly to cut off federal funds to this group.
The vote was 85 to 11 in the Senate, and 345 to 75 AGAINST ACORN.
However, the Obama Administration found a legal loophole, with a legal interpretation by Acting Assistant Attorney General Barron, to continue funding ACORN despite the congressional vote.
Tuesday, an amendment was introduced to the House Appropriations Committee to close this loophole and defund ACORN.
It was voted down 9 to 5---9 Democrat versus 5 Republican representatives.
Just to let you know that, although the language is still in the Appropriatons Bill to prohibit funding ACORN, the Justice Department's ruling will render that prohibition null and void.

More on the Safe School Czar

Or maybe Not-Too-Safe? Or even Dangerous-to-Schoolchildren Czar?
Mr. Kevin Jennings is now serving as Mr. Obama's Safe School Czar.
You may remember that Mr. Jennings had overseen the Gay, Straight and Lesbian Education Network from its beginning in 1990 until 2008. During that time, GSLEN offered sex education seminars which were supported by government (as in Massachusetts state and federal) money. In 2000, during a "youth only" session (ages 14-21), children were instructed in deviant and dangerous sexual practices. Such as uproar was raised through leaked reports of the seminar that the person was fired. This person alleged that Mr. Jennings was aware of the seminar contents. Mr. Jennings was the keynote speaker at this event.
In 2001, GSLEN held another seminar, and this time handed kids the actual equipment for the deviant sexual practices.
And is 2005, GSLEN handed out a manual to kids, a "how-to" book. And for the high-schoolers, a list of local homosexual-friendly bars.
If you want more details, you'll have to look this up. It's just too awful to discuss.

The "New" Health Care Reform--Really Obamacare!

The Senate Democrats are touting a "new" compromise on health care reform.
The final details aren't yet known--though in my opinion, we should know all about the proposals (these folks are our representatives, don't forget!)--but the gist is as follows:
The Office of Personnel Management, which is controlled by TAADAA!!!! the President will contract with the largest of the private insurers--they won't be "private" or "for-profit" anymore--and essentially control a nationwide insurance scheme that, if I may emphasize this, WILL BE CONTROLLED by the President.
And, as another part of this "compromise", all adults from age 55 up will be enrolled under Medicare (which, at the same time, will be cut by one-half trillion dollars. That should ensure plenty of money for absolutely top-notch medical care for all these people, don't you think?). According to Public Option proponent Representative Weiner (D-New York), “Expanding Medicare is an unvarnished, complete victory for people like me. It’s the mother of all public options.”
And the Washington Post, “ The irony of this late breaking Medicare proposal is that it could be a bigger step toward a single payer system than the milquetoast public option plans rejected by Senate moderates as too disruptive of the private market.”
Write your Senator and all Senators and Just Say Not!

Creating New Jobs??

President Obama held a forum last week on creating new jobs, admitting that he didn't know how to do this.
I would agree with him on this: obviously, the stimulus spending hasn't created nor saved any jobs in any number.
He neglected to invite conservative, pro-free market groups such as the the U.S. Chamber of Commerce or the National Federation of Independent Businesses--instead, those in favor of White House economic policies were part of the summit. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/dec/02/obama-policy-critics-not-invited-to-jobs-summit/
So, what was the end result?
Mr. Obama suggested several things:
1. One year freeze on capital gains tax for small businesses.
This would be of assistance. But a real help for businesses would be elimination of capital gains tax (something Congress just increased last week). Businesses (and individuals, too, for that matter) have already paid taxes on this money. Let small businesses keep their hard earned money and pass it on to future generations.
2. Tax incentives for new hiring. Sounds pretty good, but an unexpected consequence could be the firing of long term employees in order to take advantage of these tax breaks.
3. Using TARP money to aid small businesses. In all probability, small businesses won't want to end up beholden to the federal government like the banks that have accepted federal money. But the biggest problem is that BY LAW, the TARP money cannot be spent on anything but banking industries!
(You know, why doesn't someone proof-read these speeches?)
4. The so-called "Cash for Caulkers", which will pay individual homeowners for updating the weatherproofing on their houses. I guess if you are a caulker, you'd benefit, but I fail to see this generating a huge number of new jobs.
5. New spending on infrastructure (such as bridges, roads, ports, railways, etc). I suppose this may lead to some new jobs.
6. More assistance for the unemployed. I truly fail to see how this will create new jobs.
According to Fox News, Mr. Obama stated, "We were forced to take those steps (to jump-start the economy) largely without the help of an opposition party which, unfortunately, after having presided over the decision-making that had led to the crisis, decided to hand it over to others to solve," 'starting his address with a history lesson on the roots of the recession.'
I will shortly give some real incentives for job creation and growth.

Oops, That Pesky Constitution

Article I, Section 9 of the United States Constitution:
"No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State."
The Nobel Prize is given by a body overseen by the government of Norway. But, if you wish to ignore that little problem, there is still the difficulty that President Obama accepted an emolument (money) without the approval of Congress.
And, if you want to totally ignore the law of our land (ie, the Constitution), there's still the little problem of the tax code:
“The decoration is deemed to have been accepted on behalf of the United States, shall become the property of the United States, and shall be deposited by the employee, within sixty days of acceptance, with the employing agency for official use.”

BTW, this has been understood to be the law in the past, by President Theodore Roosevelt who did not receive his prize until after leaving office, to President Clinton's legal review in 1993.
Will our law be upheld?

The "A" Word

Abortion.
Like, "No Abortion" in the health reform bill.
Like, it's not really a baby anyhow.
The Senate, first.......the Democrats in the Senate (minus a few dems) rejected an amendment by Senators Nelson (D-Nebraska) and Hatch (R-Utah) to ban abortion funding with tax-supported dollars.
I guess the senators bought Senator Barbara Boxer's (D-California) declaration that Viagra is equivalent to abortion--and that the senators wouldn't want to prevent men from getting this drug that "involves his (men's) reproductive health care."
Huh?
Besides, it's the morally right thing to do, according to Senator Dianne Feinsteing (D-California). When asked this question, she replied, “Is it morally correct? Yes, I believe it is. Abortion is legal, and there (are) certain very tragic circumstances that a woman finds herself in. Married, with an unborn baby that’s unable to survive outside of the womb, her doctor tells her it’s a threat to her health. I think she ought to have a policy available to her.”
Asked again, supposedly for a straighter answer, she replied affirmatively, stating taxpayers pay for all sorts of things that they don't agree with.
Except---the Hyde amendment (which covers Medicare) and the Nelson proposal do not force a women to bear a baby that results from rape or incest, or would threaten the mother's life. So there goes that argument.
And perhaps her second statement shows the need for a more truly representational government and a more limited government.
(I say this because over half the country opposes abortion on demand--so, if we had a Congress that listened to the people, ABORTION funded by taxpayers wouldn't even be a debate!)
Oh, and in case you're wondering...it's not a baby anyway. At least according to Planned Parenthood.
Live Action is visiting Planned Parenthood clinic to expose the pressure and manipulation that occurs when talking to women about abortion.
It's "a fetus....That is not a baby.”
And, it's not "heart beats", it's heart "tones".
Three of a kind??

The Economy Is...Not So Good, Actually

Unemployment at 10%.
Down a bit from 10.2%.
Unfortuntely, those who study this kind of stuff aren't nearly as thrilled as the White House with these numbers.
The decrease in unemployment is primarily from a few changes:
***Temporary, holiday employment (not a bad thing--it's economically good that stores and other businesses need temporary help--but this does skew the numbers), http://www.marklevinshow.com/goout.asp?u=http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2009/12/gains-in-temporary-help-flattens-out.html
***About 98,000 workers have left the labor force--mostly teen-agers. They have given up on finding a job. Thus, these numbers are no longer included in the equation.
***Census hirings--it's that time again--have inflated hiring numbers. But this is just a temporary blip on the economic scene, and not a lasting boost to unemployment. http://www.marklevinshow.com/goout.asp?u=http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125876514545758393.html
The problem is, just as President Obama admits, the lack of new jobs. New jobs just aren't being created. Mr. Obama also admits that he doesn't know how to fix this problem. That's why he held a forum this past Thursday on the problem.
He just forgot to invite those most involved in small businesses, which are the source of most of the employment in the United States.
What is the problem? Well, no one's investing in business. Why would any businessman invest in any business when the federal government can just go in and take over business, a la General Motors, and not pay the investors their due, by law?

Democrats Cut Out Medicare Help to Homebound Seniors

On top of cutting Medicare by half a trillion dollars, Senate Democrats have now voted to cut home care for invalid senior citizens.
Home care will be cut by 43 billion dollars. This money will go to pay for health insurance for the uninsured.
Senator Baucus, D-Montana, states that this will cut out fraud and overpayment, and that savings will go back to Medicare.
Wrong.
This money will go to Medicaid in order to pay for the uninsured--the money will leave the Medicare program entirely.
And how do you overpay home health care providers who are barely surviving on Medicare rates?
Mr. Baucus stated, “Nobody here is trying to throw seniors under the bus.”

Afghanistan, Finally

This is more of an essay of my thoughts and feelings about Afghanistan:
1. The President has decided to sent 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. General McChrystal asked for 40,000 more troops.
If President Obama endorses General McChrystal's tactics--which Obama seems to, seeing as how he keeps McChrystal as the general in charge--why is President Obama only sending 3/4 of the troops that the general says he needs? Why is the president only supporting the general three-fourths of what is needed?
Now, there are many different ideas of exactly what needs to be done in Afghanistan--but if you say you want a certain thing done--why don't you give it your best shot?

2. What exactly is the Taliban to us? A friend? A threat? If the President isn't sure what this group bodes for our national security--how can he make a reasonable plan to deal with the Taliban?

3. On another aspect of this whole thing--how can the President pretend that the Afghani elections are fair and democratic? If you base your plans on faulty premises--you get faulty plans.

4. Why the three month delay in announcing the exact same strategy that President Obama announced in March? And in August? If this is so important to our national security--why the pondering and dithering to reach the exact same conclusions?

5. Why only 18 months? Again, if this is of such urgency, why is President Obama giving this only one and one-half years--especially since it takes a while just to get troops over to Afghanistan, and get things going. I thought we were talking about the safety of our country?

In short, I am more than a bit confused about all this. Again, there are many different ideas and proposals about what should be done in Afghanistan--and it's a very complicated conundrum. But if this is an issue of national security, then I would like to see a well-thought-out plan and a proper implementation of said plan.

The Looming Medicare Disaster

A Guest Article by my DH:

So you think ObamaCare may be a disaster in a few years? A real disaster looms in 3 months, not 3 years, when Medicare cuts the payment rates to doctors and physicians by 21% on January 1, 2010. The 21% cut in Medicare reimbursements mandated by Congress, and the similar cuts in commercial insurance reimbursements that would certainly follow, will be disastrous. Congress continues to embrace the delusion that physicians and hospitals can magically find some way to make up for a 21% cut in payments when even now hospitals lose money on every Medicare patient they treat and doctors break even at best.
If Medicare reimbursements are cut by 21% on January 1, 2010; on January 2 in order to avoid bankruptcy most physicians are going to be forced to decline to see any new Medicare patients; because from January 2 forward every single Medicare patient will cost doctors and hospitals far more than they can be paid for taking care of them. How long could any business remain open selling its products or services for considerably less than it paid for them? I honestly don't think that Congress has any appreciation of the magnitude of the crisis that looms. Medicare will implode three months from now because of their failure to act rather than five years from now because of the healthcare bill that the majority party is trying to push through Congress.

It is unfortunate, and in my opinion unconscionable, that Congress would make promises to seniors it has no intention of fulfilling and rather than face the inconvenience of raising taxes or cutting other expenditures has instead passed the cost of that program on to physicians and hospitals via reimbursements that at best barely cover their overhead. Tyranny of the majority is tyranny nonetheless.

Congress has just over a month to fix this, or at the very least kick the problem one more year down the road as they have for the last several years. If they do not do so, on January second Medicare patients will find it very nearly impossible to find a doctor. Initially they will blame physicians but ultimately they will, quite appropriately, blame Congress.

Iran's Snub

Iran is now planning ten new uranium enrichment plants, defiantly going against the United States, US allies, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the United Nations.
This occurs just weeks after Iran was discovered to have a secret uranium enrichment plant in Qom, Iran.
And just after Iran's meeting with Britain, France, Russian, Germany and China in Geneva, where these major world powers were supposed to have Iran call a halt to its nuclear program (or at least set up some ground rules). It was not successful.
President Obama has promised to negotiate with Iran and offer a "hand of friendship", and thus bring about a diplomatic solution to this fiasco.
Iran's response to the "hand of friendship"? Rejection and ridicule.
Another unsuccessful move.
President Obama now wishes to continue to talk with other countries about what to do next. He sought to get China's help in censoring Iran, to no avail. The next meeting is set for Brussels, but officials don't expect any decisions or actions against Iran.
Are we planning another unsuccessful tactic?

President Obama's Climate Czar

when asked about the emails indicating that scientists have been hoodwinking us about global warming:
"I'm sticking with the 2,500 scientists. These people have been studying this issue for a very long time and agree this problem is real," said Ms. Browner.
Yes, Ms. Browner, they have been studying the issue a long time, using data supplied by those scientists who have been intent on misleading the world about climate change for a long, long time.
About as cogent as President Obama vowing to reduce carbon emissions to save the world.
Since when is science ruled by consensus?
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/nov/25/climate-czar-says-e-mails-dont-change-anything/

Wow--What's Going to be Included in Government Health Care?

Abortions, that's for sure.
Tax incentives for businesses to cover same-sex partners (in the House bill).
Grants for states to counsel low-income families on child-rearing practices (a little overbearing, wouldn't you say?)
And, if Senators John Kerry D-MA and Orrin Hatch R-Utah has their way, government health care, and indeed all health care (since it will essentially be controlled by the federal government), will cover Christian Science faith healing.
Don't get me wrong, prayer works. (And so does medicine, which is where I differ from Christian Scientists.) But should insurance pay for prayer?
As the Cato Institute points out, when health care becomes part of the political arena, it becomes politicized.

What Are They Going to Talk About in Copenhagen?

"ClimateGate", as many pundits have named it.
What is this? Why, just that leading climatologists from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglica University in the UK have been manipulating, forging and just plain lying about global warming.
So what? A bunch of kooky scientists off on some delusional rendevous about global warming?
Yes, BUT they are taking us with them.
This is the research that Cap and Trade is based upon, and for which we shall be taxed in all manner of ways to reduce global warming.
This is the research that governments around the world have spent billions of the world's money on, instead of other, more worthy (and real) causes.
This is why the Environmental Protection Agency has suppressed a dissenting scientist's work and opinions of its own researchers.
And yet this incredible news story hasn't been mentioned on ABC, CBS, NBC, or CNN!
So, What Are They Going to Talk about in Copenhagen, since global warming seems to be gone out the back door?

True Cost of Obamacare

Almost 5 trillion dollars.
So how do you manage to, well, pretend that this health care bill will cost only 894 billion dollars (or whatever the figure is--it's a lot--but five times a lot is a whole lot of money!)
You just conveniently leave out a whole lot of expenditures.
Like paying doctors adequately for Medicare--unless, of course, you are actually thinking of NOT paying doctors for their Medicare patients--at which point there will be no more Medicare doctors. Doctors can't just work for nothing, or less than nothing!
Or, making Medicare cuts. Ditto.
Or, just looking at the first ten years of government health care, collecting taxes for the ten years, but only spending money the last 6 years of the upcoming decade.
Bait and Switch?
From Heritage.org

Sold Out

Senator Mary Landrieu D-LA got her money for her "aye" vote on cloture of the Reid Obamacare bill.
Three hundred million dollars, to be exact.
She wasn't the only one to receive promises from Reid in return for a yes vote:
Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) got support his plan to expand eligibility for health insurance.
Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) got rid of a provision stripping health insurers of their antitrust exemption.
It's just that Landrieu was the most blatant, money-grubbing example of wheelin'-n-dealin'.

Miss Manners Would Be Appalled

Enough of bad manners!
Someone needs a slap on the wrist. Who in the world is advising our President on his manners?
Not only once, but twice!! bowing to another head of state.
It's simply not done.
Neither does one touch the Queen of England.
Nor does one hand out inane, cheap gifts to foreign heads of state. The Queen doesn't want your speeches on an IPod--she possibly doesn't even want an IPod. The Prime Minister doesn't want 25 movie DVDs that won't even play on English DVD players. One doesn't NOT have time for PM either. Nor does one NOT have time, with every other democratic head of state, to attend a major function celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall.
One shouldn't miff every single ally in the world that one has.

ACORN in the news again

ACORN is suing to get its government money back.
After all, the Los Angeles ACORN office, while not being terribly opposed to helping with a housing loan to support prostitution, Did draw the line when underage girls were mentioned.
But, oh yes, there's been a slight, well, downturn in the saga of ACORN.
The South Central LA office of ACORN has now been exposed as actually wanting to help the "prostitute" and the "pimp" in doing research into international sex trade for young girls and into money laundering for the sex trade.
Wow--I'm not sure what to say.
Except I'm shocked--SHOCKED--that these folks are President Obama's friends.

Quote of the Day

Senator Patrick Leahy D-Vermont on why terrorists can be tried in civilian courts:
“For one thing, capturing Osama bin Laden, we’ve got enough on him we don’t need to interrogate him.”
Nope, don't need to interrogate him and find out all sorts of good military intelligence to help save the lives of our troops--or even of Americans here back home. Nope, not at all.

The Stimulus Plan--Any Better News?

In a word---No.
Alabama received 3 billion dollars in stimulus money.
The result?
Increased unemployment.
As an example, the Fort Wayne Housing Authority spent $540,071 to create a grand total of 14 jobs to reroof apartments.
Even more astounding (nothing to do with Arkansas), the White House reports 6.4 billion dollars being given to 440 fake congressional districts. (Just so you know, the United States has a grand total of 435 congressional districts).
And just in case you're interested, the 6.4 billion dollars spent in the phony districts created 30,000 phony jobs, which amounts to $225,000 per phony job.
Could the White House be making up lots of phony numbers?
But my question--where did the money go?

Senate Vote, Here We Come

Time to contact your Senators.
Senator Reid hopes to have a vote this Saturday.
Folks to call:
Go to http://www.marklevinshow.com/Article.asp?id=1595660&spid=32364 to click directly to these Senators' emails.

I believe that this bill is monstrous--
The cost is tremendous. Mr. Reid's bill imposes new taxes on insurance companies (which will increase our health premiums), drugs and medical devices (which will increase our costs), businesses (which will decrease our wages and/or lead to more firings or less hirings), and incredibly, will divorce Medicare taxes from paying FOR Medicare!
Our Medicare taxes (increased, by the way) will not go to support our Medicare--but go to a general fund--dare I say slush fund--for the federal government to spend.

Again, under Reid's plan, Americans who decide to have health insurance would go to jail! Of course, Mrs. Pelosi thought this was just fine and dandy.

Not only does the Senate plan cover elective abortion, the wording would diminish the conscience rights of those insurers who do not wish to cover abortion.

A public, federally-controlled insurance plan is part of this bill--which would result in most Americans losing their private health care coverage within 5 years.

Like I said, call/write/email the above people. Plus your Senator.

Catching Up: Terrorists on Trial

Moving terrorist trials to federal courts? How do I think this unwise?
Let me count the ways.....
1. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has already pleaded "guilty".
2. This is an enemy combatant case--not a criminal case. The laws are different, and for a good reasons, which include the fact that war criminals have never been afforded the same constitutional rights of a US citizen. That's because war criminals are NOT US citizens--they have committed acts of war against our country, and are subject to international rules of war. Attorney General Eric Holder is wrong to move these men to US federal courts.
Now, is he ill-informed, politically movitivated or just plain dumb?--I'm not sure--you decide by his statement when asked if a war criminal's case had ever been placed into US courts. “I don’t know. I’d have to look at that. I think that, you know, the determination I’ve made…”

(And another question, Mr. Holder--why are some terrorists being tried by military commission but these 5 men are now to be tried by federal courts? What's the difference in these cases? Why couldn't they all be tried by military commission, or by US courts?)

3. The Guanatamo Bay prison facility is designed to handle the security issues associated with war crimes trials. New York City federal courts are not designed to handle these security risks. Despite Mr. Holder's assurances that security is and has always been a non-issue, New York City is now asking for federal money to specifically help with increasing security.
4. Military tribunals allow for interrogation and collecting evidence as part of how terrorists are treated. This isn't allowed in normal criminal proceedings. Will Mr. Holder's decision lead to these 5 terrorists' cases being thrown out of court? Will this decision hamper normal military interrogation in the future?

And, last but not least, when President Obama states that he expects these terrorists to 'hang' (so to speak), isn't he prejudicing the trial? How will jurists be found who are impartital--when our President is so blatantly biased?
My summary---dweedle-dee, dweedle DUMB

The Berlin Wall

Associated Press
Isn't it wonderful that the anniversary of the Berlin Wall falling is so near to our own Veteran's Day?
Yes! After all, the United States is supposed to stand for freedom and liberty--those principles upon which it was founded.
But it's way too bad that President Obama chose not to attend the 20th anniversary of the fall. He was invited to attend--but the White House decided "No".
Apparently, with the missile defense system for Poland and the Czech Republic nixed, and the wishy-washiness of making decisions on Afghanistan, It Just Wouldn't Look Good.
President Obama stated he was too busy to go to Berlin. So what did he do on Monday?
He was interviewed by ABC, had his daily briefings, went by a reception for the United Jewish Communities, and met with Prime Minister Netanyahu.
He did send a video, mentioning that "their (Germany's) American ally would be led by a man of African descent," but forgetting to mention President Reagan.

Veteran's Day

Today, we had a wonderful chapel at seminary in honor of Veteran's Day.
The color guard was firefighters, and then we sang the Star Spangled Banner and Taps was played.
Then we had a great talk on helping our veterans.
To whom we owe so much.
Think about it....what about those brave soldiers, who despite much dissension about fighting against the mother country, England, fought a desperate and almost unwinnable war for our freedom? What if they had said--oh, well?
Then, we fought a war amonst ourselves, to right a grievous wrong in slavery.
In the last century, we fought against despotic, totalitarian, and yes--evil---governments to free Europe and Asia.
Now, we fight against terrorist groups who have killed Americans, even on American soil.

Fort Hood

I really wasn't going to write about Ft. Hood, but besides the terrible tragedy that it truly was--it's also becoming incredibly political.
It seems that the murderer (not the alleged shooter--wow, what a delicate way of stating it!) was, at the very least, becoming more and more fanatic and leaning toward an extremist form of Islam. He made statements several times that were extreme enough to cause his fellow soldiers to complain to complain to superiors. He was briefly investigated a year ago for web postings to radical Islamic sites. He was distraught about going overseas. He had bought 2 guns, cleaned out his apartment, and said goodbye to friends.
At least the first three problems, together, should have alerted the Army that something was wrong. But apparently Political Correctness won out.
This is not fair to our troops. They deserve better than that.

Winning the Battle, Losing the War

This is my (and my wonderfully smart middle son's) opinion:
If the Republicans had voted against the Stupak Amendment (which forbids the funds in this Health Reform Bill to be used for abortion), the Health Care Reform bill probably would not have passed.
Why? Because some portion of the 64 Democrats who voted "for" the Stupak Amendment would then NOT have voted for the whole Health Care reform. The Health Care bill would have been defeated.
I would lay this all at the feet of Representatative John Boehner R-OH, House Republican leader and Representative Eric Cantor R-Va, House Minority Whip.
Goodness Gracious, what poor planning, sir!

Please consider writing Mr. Cantor and your representative and asking them about this amendment vote--
