When asked about the constitutionality of requiring everyone in the United States to buy health insurance (as the current health care reform bill does), Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), who also happens to be head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, replied that "nobody questions" Congress' authority to do this.
He also seemed a trifle confused on other constitutional issues.
Did I mention that Senator Leahy is chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee?
Meanwhile, back at the House--of Representatives, that is--Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) protested that the question of mandates (the federal government making everyone buy health insurance) was ridiculous. Her spokesman said that this wasn't a serious question.
So, wondering about the constitutionality of a bill isn't serious? The rule of law is not something to be carefully considered? Knowledge of our constitution isn't requisite for our elected representatives?
